QUICK ANSWER
The questions to ask a mixing engineer before you pay cover released songs close to your sound, their role on each, what the price includes, revisions, deliverables, when the clock starts and whether you can hear a short test first. Here’s how I answer each question.

01 / THE SHORT LIST
What should you ask a mixing engineer before you pay?
Ask about their sound, the work they can point to, what the price covers, how the project runs and whether you can hear a test mix.
| # | Ask | Why it matters | A good answer sounds like | How I answer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Can I hear released songs close to my sound? | Vocal level, low end and space follow different rules in each genre. | Released songs near your style, not only a demo reel. | "GOZO," "Jesus Is King" and "Colores," plus "Is That Okay?" (co-production & programming). |
| 2 | What was your role, and can I check it? | "Worked on" can mean a lot of things. | A specific role you can check in liner notes, Muso.AI or Spotify credits. | I co-produced "Is That Okay?" (2021 Dove nominee). I produced and engineered ENISA's "Mockingbird." |
| 3 | What does the price include? mixing vs mastering | Mastering, revisions and versions aren't always in. | Mix, master (or not), rounds and files, named up front. | Mixing & mastering for one song in every tier, 3 revision rounds. |
| 4 | How do you price my session? | Big sessions surprise people. | One clear rule before you pay. | By track count: $299 (up to 15), $549 (16–30), $699 (31–80), 81+ quoted. |
| 5 | What if my song runs long? | Long songs take longer to mix. | A stated rule, not a surprise invoice. | Up to 4 minutes included, +$50 per extra minute. |
| 6 | How many revisions, and how do I send notes? | This is where most disagreements start. | A set number of rounds, in writing, with a way to send notes. | 3 rounds on every tier; one consolidated list of notes per round. |
| 7 | What do I get back? | An instrumental or TV mix costs more to ask for later. | A listed deliverable per tier. | Basic: main master + 1 alternate. Standard: main master + instrumental + TV mix. Premium: 5 masters + mastered stems + multitracks. |
| 8 | When does the clock start? | "A week" means nothing if it starts later than you think. | A clear start point and a date. | 5–7 business days after payment and complete files; schedule confirmed before work begins. |
| 9 | What do you need from me? how to prepare tracks for mixing | Missing files cost days. | A specific list. | Tracks (multitracks), stems if that's what you have, 1–3 references, notes, BPM and key. |
| 10 | Can I hear a test first? | Lower risk before a big project. | A paid test on a short clip. | Yes: $100 test mix, ideally under 30 seconds (max about 40). |
How I put this together: the questions I’d want answered if I were hiring someone, with my answers taken from my live packages page and Project Builder, read Nov 2 2026.
02 / THE SOUND
How do you know they can mix your kind of song?
Listen to released songs close to your sound and judge where the vocal sits, how the low end feels and how the chorus opens up. Play a reference and the engineer’s example at a similar volume so you can focus on the balance.
Their references are your blueprint.
I’d start by listening to the part of the song you care about most. That makes it easier to find an engineer whose references match your sound. Here are three records and the role I had on each.
03 / THE PROOF
How do you check a mixing engineer's credits?
Ask what the engineer did on the song, then check the role where you can.
- Liner notes and label releases. Look for the job beside the name, especially if several people worked on the same song.
- Muso.AI. It collects credit data and gives you another place to look.
- Spotify song credits. Spotify expanded Song Credits on Nov 19, 2025 to show producers and engineers. Spotify’s support page explains that the metadata comes from labels and distributors, who can resend it to correct a credit.
Engineering credits get left off releases all the time, so a missing credit isn't proof of anything. A clear answer about the role is what you want.
I co-produced "Is That Okay?" by Social Club Misfits & Lecrae, a 2021 GMA Dove Award nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year, from Feared By Hell, a 2021 Dove nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year. I produced and engineered ENISA's "Mockingbird."
You can check the role whether you’re hiring through SoundBetter, Fiverr or directly.
04 / THE SCOPE
What should the price include?
Ask for the mix scope, whether mastering is included, the number of revision rounds and the files you’ll get back. Every tier I offer includes mixing and mastering for one song and 3 revision rounds.
| Tier | Tracks | Price | You get | Revisions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | up to 15 | $299 | mixing & mastering, main master + 1 alternate | 3 rounds |
| Standard | 16–30 | $549 | mixing & mastering, main master + instrumental + TV mix | 3 rounds |
| Premium | 31–80 | $699 | mixing & mastering, 5 masters + mastered stems + multitracks | 3 rounds |
| Big session | 81+ | quoted | personal quote | — |
Premium master formats and alternate versions are confirmed before work begins. Songs over 4 minutes are +$50 per extra minute. Booking through the Project Builder adds a 3% processing fee.
See my mix & master packages for the full breakdown.
05 / BIG SESSIONS
How should a big session be priced?
Ask for a clear pricing rule up front so you can work out where your song fits before paying. I charge by track count per song, with tiers at $299, $549 and $699. I quote sessions with 81 or more tracks individually.
Count each individual audio track in your session, not the number of songs. Songs over 4 minutes are +$50 per extra minute, and the Builder adds a 3% processing fee.
You can count your tracks in the Builder or read more about how much mixing costs.
06 / REVISIONS AND NOTES
How do revisions work?
Ask how many rounds you get and how the engineer wants the notes sent. Every tier includes 3 rounds of revisions. Send a consolidated list of notes for each round.
If you’re collecting feedback from a producer or bandmate, put it all in one list before you send it. A timestamp and a specific note, like “bring the lead vocal up on the first line of the chorus,” give the engineer a place to start.
07 / TIMING
When does the clock start?
Ask whether turnaround starts when you pay or when the complete files arrive. My turnaround is 5–7 business days after payment and complete files. I’ll follow up personally by email to confirm your files and schedule before work begins.
08 / A TEST
Can you hear a test before you book?
Yes, it’s a fair ask. I offer a $100 test mix on a short clip, ideally under 30 seconds and no more than about 40.
09 / ASK ANYONE
What else is worth getting in writing?
Get clear answers on editing, changes to the session, ownership and what happens if the mix doesn’t land.
- Is vocal tuning or editing included?
- What happens if I send a new vocal after the first pass?
- Who owns the files and is there any split?
- What happens if I'm not happy?
Whoever you hire, get these answers in writing before you pay.
10 / RED FLAGS
What are the warning signs?
Watch for unclear roles, vague terms and promises about results the engineer can’t control.
- No released work near your sound. Ask for an example that lets you judge the vocal, low end or space you’re after.
- Vague answers on revisions or deliverables. Ask them to name the rounds and files before you pay.
- A price before they know your track count. Ask what session size that quote covers.
- Promises about charts, playlists or streams. Ask what they’ll deliver for your song.
If another engineer's released work is closer to the record you hear in your head, and they answer these questions clearly, hire them. That's the whole point of asking.
11 / QUICK ANSWERS
FAQ
What questions should I ask a mixing engineer?
Ask to hear released songs close to your sound, what their role was, what the price includes, how revisions and deliverables work, when turnaround starts and whether you can hear a test. Get the answers in writing before you pay.
How do I know if a mixing engineer is legit?
Listen to released work near your style and ask what they did on each song. Then check what you can in liner notes, Muso.AI or Spotify's song credits, keeping in mind that engineering credits are often left off.
How many revisions should a mix include?
Ask before you pay, and ask what counts as a round. I include 3 revision rounds on every tier and ask for one consolidated list of notes per round.
What files should I get back from a mix engineer?
At least your main master; ask about an instrumental, TV mix and stems now, not later. My tiers list them: main + 1 alternate, main + instrumental + TV mix, or 5 masters + mastered stems + multitracks.
How much should a mix cost?
It depends on the engineer and the session. I price mix & master by track count: $299 up to 15 tracks, $549 for 16–30 and $699 for 31–80, with 81+ quoted.
Should I ask for a test mix?
It's a fair ask before a big project. I offer a $100 test mix on a short clip, ideally under 30 seconds.
How long should a mix take?
Ask when the clock starts. Mine is 5–7 business days after payment and complete files.
Do you mix songs made with Suno or other AI tools?
Yes. I take Suno, AI and stem projects; send the stems, the AI version and a reference. Here’s how to make a Suno song sound professional.
