THE QUICK ANSWER / MIXING VS MASTERING

Mixing vs mastering: mixing is where every track in your song gets balanced and shaped into one stereo file. Mastering is the last pass on that finished file so it sounds consistent, competitive and ready to release. Mixing comes first; mastering comes second.

Most of my clients never have to choose, because mastering's included in every mix tier I offer.

Here's the difference between mixing and mastering, which one your song needs, what to send, and what each service costs.

What does mixing actually do?

Mixing works on the individual tracks: your lead vocal, background vocals, drums, bass, keys and every other part. I balance and shape those pieces so they become one song.

  • Balance: Set levels so the vocal and the song's hook lead.
  • Tone: Use EQ to shape the sound so parts don't fight for the same space.
  • Dynamics: Use compression to help the vocal stay steady.
  • Space: Place parts with reverb, delay and stereo positioning.
  • Movement: Use automation so the song builds and the right details come forward.

Mixing = balancing and shaping the individual tracks into one stereo song.

What does mastering actually do?

Mastering works on the finished stereo mix, or a few grouped stems. It is the finishing pass after the balance and creative direction of the mix are settled.

  • Overall tone: Refine the sound of the finished song as a whole.
  • Loudness for release: Spotify normalizes playback to about -14 LUFS (Spotify for Artists, read Oct 31, 2026); loudness targets get their own post.
  • Consistency: Help the songs on an EP or album sit together.
  • Final files: With my standard mastering service, a final main master plus an instrumental master.

Mastering = the final finishing pass on a mixed song before release.

Mixing vs mastering: how do they compare?

Mixing shapes the separate parts; mastering finishes the combined song. The starting files and the control available are the clearest differences.

Which one does your song need?

Look at what you have: separate tracks need a mix; a finished mix you love needs mastering. A mix you keep tweaking may need more mixing before it reaches the final pass.

  • You have separate tracks or stems: You need a mix. Mastering is included in my mix & master packages.
  • You have a finished mix you love: You need mastering only.
  • You have a mix you keep tweaking: It isn't finished. You need a mix, or a test mix to find out what would change.

If your mix is finished and you love how it sounds, you don't need me to mix it. Send it for mastering and keep your money.

“Mastering starts with your finished mix.”

Can mastering fix a bad mix?

No, not really. Mastering moves the whole song at once, so a problem inside an individual track usually belongs in the mix.

Stem mastering ($200, up to four grouped stems: vocals, drums, bass, all melody instruments together) gives a little more control over the balance. But a harsh vocal or a muddy kick inside the mix is a mixing job.

If you're not sure your mix is ready, ask before you buy mastering.

Can the same engineer mix and master your song?

Yes, and it's common. Some artists like a second set of ears for mastering; that's a fine choice too.

With me, every mix tier comes back already mastered. If you mixed it yourself or with someone else, my mastering service is there for the finished mix.

For the full breakdown, read how much mixing costs. You can price your song by track count in the Project Builder.

What do you send for mixing vs mastering?

For mixing, send the separate tracks and your direction for the song. For mastering, send the finished main mix and matching instrumental, or up to four aligned grouped stems.

For mixing

  • Audio: Every track as its own WAV.
  • Direction: Your rough mix and 1–3 reference songs.
  • Details: BPM, key and notes.

Use the free file-prep guide before exporting. As I explain in the gospel/R&B guide, send references and a premix to show your vision and the last version you worked on.

For mastering

  • Standard mastering: Your final main mix and a matching instrumental mix.
  • Stem mastering: Up to four grouped stems, exported from the same start point.
  • Direction: Reference songs and notes.

Mastering needs a finished mix with headroom: leave room for the final processing instead of sending a clipped file. Sage Audio's mix-prep guide explains that preparation (read Oct 31, 2026).

FAQ

Mixing comes first; mastering finishes it.

What's the difference between mixing and mastering?

Mixing balances and shapes all the individual tracks of a song into one stereo file. Mastering is the final pass on that finished file so it's consistent and ready for release.

Which comes first, mixing or mastering?

Mixing always comes first. Mastering works on the finished mix, so the mix has to be done before mastering starts.

Can I master a song without mixing it?

Only if the song is already mixed. If you have separate tracks, they need to be mixed first; if you have one finished stereo file you're happy with, mastering is the next step.

Can mastering fix a bad mix?

Not really. Mastering moves the whole song at once; stem mastering gives a little more control, but problems inside individual tracks belong in the mix.

Is mastering included when you mix my song?

Yes. Every one of my mix tiers includes mastering, so you don't pay for it twice.

How much does mastering cost on its own?

With me, $124 a song for standard mastering (main master plus instrumental master) or $200 for stem mastering with up to 4 stems.

Can the same engineer mix and master?

Yes, it's common. Some artists prefer a second engineer for mastering; both approaches are normal.

How long does mixing and mastering take?

5–7 business days after payment and complete files.
