I'm on SoundBetter, Fiverr and AirGigs, and I work directly with artists, so I've seen all three from the inside.
In my experience, SoundBetter offers the best value for the type of engineer you find there. Fiverr is cheaper but more hit or miss; hiring directly can be the best value once you build a real relationship.
Here's my take on SoundBetter vs Fiverr vs hiring a mixer directly: compare the engineer, the payment process and how the mix translates before choosing a route.

How direct works ↗The short answer (which fits you).

The best place to hire a mixing engineer is the route that connects your song with the right person. A profile starts the search; samples and a clear conversation help you make the decision.
SoundBetter: how it works for artists.
In my experience, SoundBetter gives you the best value for the type of engineer you get. You're usually finding someone who's been doing this a long time and has worked with established artists.
Posting and hiring are free for artists; the provider pays commission. With Prefunded terms, SoundBetter holds the job amount until you mark it complete. Premium providers can offer 50/50: half goes to the provider at the start, and the remainder is paid at completion.
SoundBetter's support and verified-review eligibility depend on paying through its system. Those are useful reasons to keep a SoundBetter project there. Read its payment FAQ.

Fiverr: how it works for artists.
In my experience, Fiverr is cheaper, and there are great engineers there—I'm a Fiverr Pro seller myself. Results can be more hit or miss when monitoring isn't reliable. The room's address isn't the issue: a mix needs to work beyond the headphones used to make it.
Gig packages help you compare scope, delivery and revisions. Fiverr adds a 5.5% service fee, plus a small flat fee on orders under $200. Check the final checkout summary; separate payments can carry separate fees.
You order, provide requirements and review the delivery through Fiverr's order flow. Reviews connect to platform orders, and Fiverr Pro freelancers are vetted. Still listen to genre-relevant work before choosing. Sources: payment help, Payment Terms, Pro vetting and order flow.

Hiring a mix engineer directly.
Hiring directly depends on who it is. With the right engineer, it can be the best value because you develop an actual relationship. Over time, that may bring better pricing, possible discounts or connections. None of those is a promise.
Direct work means talking to the engineer and agreeing on scope in writing. Across several songs, you can build a session-based relationship instead of explaining your sound from scratch each time.
See how I work directly. My Builder currently includes a 3% processing fee; direct doesn't automatically mean fee-free.

How to protect yourself when you go direct.
Get the details in writing before sending money. Use this checklist whether you're hiring for one song or an ongoing project.

“The relationship is the real value.”
A good relationship works better with clear expectations. Ask what counts as a revision, which versions you'll receive and whether the session file is included. Keep the agreement and payment record together.
How to tell if a mix will translate.
“Cheaper doesn't always mean best.”
Ask for a released song in your genre. Play it in the car, on earbuds and on speakers. Listen for the vocal staying clear and the low end staying balanced. Ask what the engineer monitors on.
A mix that impresses on one pair of headphones still needs to hold together elsewhere. This is the check I care about when weighing value.

Red flags on any platform.
- No relevant samples: you can't hear how the engineer handles your kind of record.
- Unclear revisions: the offer doesn't explain what changes are included.
- Pressure to pay off-platform: someone you met through a marketplace asks you to bypass its payment flow.
- No written scope: neither side has a clear record of the deliverables.
These are questions to resolve, not accusations about a marketplace or engineer. If you met on SoundBetter or Fiverr, keep the project and payment there.
Does genre matter?
Yes. R&B, gospel and hip-hop can involve big sessions: vocal stacks, harmonies, choirs and layered production. Ask about track count and genre samples on every route.
The relevant question is whether this engineer can handle your arrangement and keep the voice where it belongs. For the separate pricing discussion, read How much does mixing cost in 2026.
FAQ.
Is SoundBetter legit?
Yes. It is an established music-services marketplace with verified reviews for jobs paid through its system. Check released samples and verifiable credits before choosing an engineer.
Does SoundBetter charge buyers a fee?
No. SoundBetter's FAQ says posting a job and hiring are free for artists. The provider pays the platform commission.
What fee does Fiverr charge buyers?
Fiverr's current Payment Terms list a 5.5% service fee, plus a small flat fee for orders under $200. Fees were checked Oct 30 2026; confirm the current terms and your checkout total.
Are Fiverr mixing engineers scams?
A marketplace profile alone cannot settle that question. In my experience, the bigger issue is uneven results. Listen to released samples on multiple systems, read order-linked reviews and keep payment on-platform.
Which is better, SoundBetter or Fiverr?
For me, SoundBetter offers the best value for the type of engineer you'll find; Fiverr is cheaper. Choose by relevant samples, scope and mix translation, rather than price alone.
Is it safer to pay through the platform?
For a marketplace project, on-platform payment preserves access to that platform's support and review process. Don't move a project you found there outside its system. A separately sourced direct project needs its own clear written terms.
Why hire a mixing engineer directly?
With the right person, an ongoing relationship can be the best value. Over time, it may bring better pricing or connections. Get a written scope and agreement; those benefits aren't guaranteed.
How do I protect myself hiring direct?
Verify credits and reviews, put scope and revisions in writing, use a card through a known processor, and agree on delivered files and session ownership before paying.
