Luis "Canción" Calderón Jr.

Mixing & mastering engineer, producer

I'm Luis Canción, an award-winning mixing and mastering engineer and producer in Hialeah, FL. I co-produced "Is That Okay?" by Social Club Misfits & Lecrae, a 2021 GMA Dove Award nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year, from Feared By Hell, a 2021 Dove nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year. I produced and engineered ENISA's "Mockingbird." My work carries a record that crossed Gold-level sales, Dove Award–nominated records, and credits on records that charted on Billboard, with work for Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Capitol CMG and the UFC.

THE QUICK ANSWER

A Christian hip hop mixing engineer should keep every word clear, give the 808 and kick weight without covering the vocal, and let the hook open up past the verses. Before you hire one, listen to CHH records they've actually worked on.

01 / WHAT CHH NEEDS

What does a Christian hip-hop record need from a mix?

The same things any hip-hop record needs, with one priority on top: the listener has to understand the words.

  • Clear words. Every bar should be clear on a phone speaker.
  • Low end that hits. Kick and 808 need weight without covering the lead.
  • A hook that opens up. Give the melodic layers room past the verses.

Gospel/Christian, R&B and hip-hop, in English and Spanish: that's my strongest lane. Read more about gospel and R&B mixing.

02 / EVERY WORD

How do you keep every bar clear?

The lead vocal gets its own space in the middle of the beat, with consonants that cut through and no instrument sitting right on top of it.

  • Make room in the beat where the voice lives instead of only turning the vocal up.
  • Control the harsh S sounds without dulling the words.
  • Check on a phone speaker and in the car. Every bar should stay clear.
  • Doubles support the lead, they don't fight it. They shouldn't cover the end of a bar.

A louder vocal isn't always a clearer vocal.

03 / LOW END

How much low end is too much?

When the 808 or kick starts covering the vocal or the bass line turns into mud, it's too much. The kick and 808 need weight without covering the body of the lead vocal.

  • Kick and 808 each get their own job. The lead still sits on top.
  • Check the low end on monitors and on small speakers. Usually I check low end on monitors.

Use this when you listen to your rough mix, and when you listen to an engineer's work.

04 / THE HOOK

How do you mix rap verses with a sung hook?

When rap meets a sung hook, both need room: clear consonants and forward rhythm in the verse, then space for the melodic layers.

If the hook doesn't feel bigger than the verse, the song loses its lift. Mixing it yourself? Read how to mix vocals in Logic Pro.

05 / AD-LIBS

Where do ad-libs and features go?

Ad-libs need their own place in the conversation. Check the moments where they cross the lead, and use level changes to let the right phrase come forward.

A feature verse should sit at the same clarity as yours, even if the vocal was recorded somewhere else.

06 / PICK AN ENGINEER

How do you pick a Christian hip hop mixing engineer?

Listen to CHH records they've worked on, not just a reel. Their references are your blueprint.

I co-produced and programmed 'Is That Okay?' by Social Club Misfits & Lecrae, a 2021 Dove nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year. It's from Feared By Hell, a 2021 Dove nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year. See the 2021 GMA Dove Awards nominee list.

My Latin Christian credits include Redimi2. "Colores" (Redimi2 · Funky · Alex Zurdo): mixing.

If your favorite CHH records were mixed by someone whose sound you love and you can afford them, hire them. You'll get closer to your sound with the engineer whose work already matches it.

09 / QUICK ANSWERS

FAQ

Here are the quick answers on vocal clarity, low end, references and sending your song.

What does a Christian hip hop mixing engineer do?

They balance the vocal, beat and low end so every word is clear and the record still hits. In CHH, the clarity of the message comes first.

How do you make rap vocals clear in a mix?

Make room in the beat where the voice lives, control harsh S sounds without dulling the words, and check on a phone speaker. A louder vocal isn't always a clearer vocal.

How much 808 is too much?

When it starts covering the vocal or turning the low end to mud. The kick and 808 each need their own job.

How should a sung hook sit against rap verses?

The verses want clear consonants and forward rhythm. The hook wants space for its melodic layers so it opens up past the verse.

How do I choose a CHH mixing engineer?

Listen to CHH records they've worked on, and pick the one whose work sounds closest to your references. Their references are your blueprint.

Do you mix Christian rap in Spanish?

Yes. Gospel/Christian, R&B and hip-hop, in English and Spanish, is my strongest lane, and I mixed "Colores" by Redimi2 with Funky and Alex Zurdo.

What should I send for a CHH mix?

Every track as 24-bit WAV, your rough mix, 1–3 references and the lyrics. Add notes on the moments that have to hit.

How much does it cost to mix a Christian hip hop song?

With me, $299 up to 15 tracks, $549 for 16–30 and $699 for 31–80, mastering and 3 revision rounds included. A $100 test mix on a short clip is a good first step.
