Quick answer · AI mastering vs human mastering

AI mastering vs human mastering: AI is fine for demos, drafts and quick uploads because it's fast and cheap. A human mastering engineer is worth it when the release matters: a person listens for your intent, checks your references and tells you when the mix needs work first.

I master songs for a living, so here's the fair version.

Releasing this one? Standard mastering is $124, and a person actually listens to your references.

Master my song

01 / AI MASTERINGWhat does AI mastering actually do?

You upload a stereo mix, and software analyzes it and applies EQ, compression and limiting toward a target. There are usually a few style or loudness choices.

It's fast, consistent and inexpensive. If you need a reference while the song is still changing, that convenience makes sense.

The useful question is what you need from this pass: a quick working version, or a conversation about the finished release.

02 / A PERSONWhat does a human mastering engineer do differently?

A person works toward your intent, not a preset target. Your file matters, but so does what you're trying to make it feel like.

  • Your references and notes: my mastering service asks for both, so the direction comes with the audio.
  • Catching mix problems: A person can flag a mix problem before mastering instead of treating the master as the place to solve it.
  • Matching versions: My standard master includes an instrumental master that matches the main. Send your final main mix and matching instrumental mix.
  • Consistency across an EP or album: The songs need to sit together, so listening across the project matters too.
  • A conversation: The studio follows up personally by email about your files, project and delivery.

03 / SIDE BY SIDEAI vs human mastering: how do they compare?

AI is useful for speed and a quick reference; a person adds the conversation around your release. Here's the practical comparison, with my own service details separated from general AI guidance.

04 / WHEN AI FITSWhen is AI mastering the right call?

Demos, song ideas you're sending to a co-writer, a quick upload for your socials, or a reference while you're still mixing: AI mastering is fine for all of that, and I'd tell you to save your money.

You might not need me at that stage. If you're still deciding on the song, a quick master can be enough for the next conversation.

05 / WHEN TO PAYWhen should you pay a person?

Pay a person when the release needs judgment, references and someone who can tell you the mix isn't finished. These are the situations where that conversation matters:

  • A release you're spending money to promote: Make the final sound part of that decision.
  • An EP or album that has to sit together: Listen to the songs as a project.
  • You have grouped stems: Stem mastering is $200, with up to 4 stems.
  • An AI or Suno song: If it's headed for release, read how to make a Suno song sound professional.
  • You're not sure the mix is done: Ask about the mix before buying another finishing pass.

06 / LIMITSCan AI mastering fix a bad mix?

No, and neither can a human mastering engineer. Mastering starts with a finished mix.

“Mastering starts with your finished mix.”

If the individual tracks still need work, that's a mixing decision. See mixing vs mastering for the difference, or explore the mix & master packages if you need both.

07 / TEST ITHow do you compare two masters fairly?

Match the loudness first, then compare. The louder version can distract you from whether the song actually sounds the way you want.

  1. Master with an AI service. Use the finished mix you want to compare.
  2. Get a human master of the same mix. Keep the starting file the same for both.
  3. Turn them to the same perceived level. Compare at a listening volume that feels equal.
  4. Listen on two or three systems. Try your car, earbuds and speakers.
  5. Listen to the song. Focus on the vocal, the low end and how the loud sections feel.

My site's player carries the same caution: “A louder version can sound more impressive.” Keep that in mind before choosing a favorite.

Spotify for Artists says its Normal playback setting uses about -14 LUFS, so louder masters get turned down when normalization applies (read October 31, 2026). Loudness alone isn't the advantage.

09 / COSTWhat does human mastering cost?

With me, standard mastering is $124 for the main and instrumental master, or $200 for stem mastering with up to 4 grouped stems.

Turnaround is 5–7 business days after payment and complete files. Choose standard or stem mastering for a finished mix; if you need it mixed too, mastering comes with every mix tier in the Project Builder.

10 / QUICK ANSWERSFAQ: what else should you know?

Is AI mastering good?

For demos, drafts and quick uploads, it's a useful, inexpensive tool. For a release you're putting money behind, a person listening to your references and notes is worth it.

Is AI mastering good enough for Spotify?

It can produce a file Spotify will play just fine. Spotify's Normal playback setting uses about -14 LUFS when normalization applies, so loudness alone isn't the advantage; the question is whether it sounds the way you want.

Can AI replace a mastering engineer?

For quick, low-stakes uploads, it often does. When a release needs judgment, references and someone to flag mix problems, a person still makes the difference.

Can AI mastering fix a bad mix?

No, and neither can a human mastering engineer. Mastering starts with a finished mix.

How do I compare an AI master to a human master?

Match them to the same loudness, then listen on a few systems. Otherwise the louder one usually sounds "better" for the wrong reason.

How much does human mastering cost?

With me, $124 for standard mastering (main and instrumental master) or $200 for stem mastering with up to 4 stems. Turnaround is 5–7 business days after payment and complete files.

Should I use AI mastering on a song you mixed?

You don't need to: every one of my mix tiers already includes mastering. Choose the mix service in the Builder if your song still needs mixing.
